Unfair Trade

All last summer we had a problem with pigeons on our balcony. They were nesting on the balcony below ours and decided that our balcony was a great place to just chill. Not only are pigeons very noisy early in the morning but they are very very dirty. They quickly managed to make the balcony a place I was not able to enjoy by the amount of feces they deposited over everything. Finally, we got this gooey stuff and put it all over the balcony rail. Pigeons land on it, it sticks to their feet which they don't like, so they take off again immediately. It isn't supposed to hurt them like so many other products which is why we chose it. It has been working well against the pigeons.
The last couple of days, though, I have been sitting here and have noticed a couple of little sparrows trying to land on the balcony, getting stuck and taking off too. The sparrows are so small that their tails have gotten stuck in the goo. I like the little sparrows. There is one has visited quite regularly, hopping along the balcony, peeking in the windows, teasing the cats, and announcing his presence with the occasional loud CHIRP! Sparrows are tiny with cheeky attitude. While they are so tiny, one hopping along a window ledge makes the noise of a small elephant walking into the room. I don't know how they do it, but they do. Especially at 6am. Now I am concerned for the little sparrows. What if the goo sticks to a wing or something and actually causes them harm? Also, what if the goo teaches the little sparrows not to come here? I'd miss the occasional visit from Cheeky Sparrow which drives the cats, especially Tigger into spasms.
Stupid pigeons.
